Building and Fire Prevention

Reviews,  processes, issues, and inspects of building permits to ensure that construction and development complies with the provisions of the adopted International Building Code, the Edgewood Municipal Code, and any relevant State codes.

We recognize the need to turnaround the review of applications quickly, the need of contractors to keep up with their construction schedule and, most importantly, the need for businesses to begin operating as soon as possible. With that in mind, the Building Division is always looking for ways to help applicants navigate through the permitting process.

Building Permit Processing

How long will it take to get a permit?
The process of obtaining a permit is an interactive process. Factors that influence the length of time to obtain a permit are as follows:

  • Completeness, accuracy and clarity of the plans and application
  • Lot/property specific issues
  • Availability of contacts (owner, agent, architect, engineer etc.) to answer reviewer questions
  • Workload of City Staff at the time of permit application
  • The type of permit

Depending on the type of permit and the factors listed above, the length of time will vary greatly.

For example

  • Very small interior-only project with no engineering requirements might qualify for 1 week review (express).
  • Smaller single family alternations and additions and or interior only tenant improvement project might qualify for 2 weeks for the first review (fast track). If plan corrections are needed, an additional review will be required. Then the 2nd review will typically be completed within 1 week.
  • New single family typically take 5 weeks for the first review. If plan corrections are needed, an additional review will be required. Then the 2nd review will typically be completed within 2 weeks.
  • Complex project may take up to 10 weeks for the first review. If plan corrections are needed, an additional review will be required. Then the 2nd review will typically be completed within 3 weeks.
